HULK 4x4 Lithium Battery: Installation, Charging & Storage Guide

HULK 4x4 Lithium Batteries are Lithium Iron Phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries built as a drop-in replacement for traditional lead acid batteries. Designed for recreational vehicles, caravans, boats, mobile homes, camping and industrial energy storage. As a lithium 4x4 battery, it's built for touring and off road setups that need reliable power away from mains electricity, whether that's paired with solar panels at a remote camp or running gear off grid for days at a time. These are not starting/cranking batteries and are not designed to start your vehicle's engine. They're built to run your fridge, lighting, water pump and other 12V accessories independently of your vehicle's starter battery.

Like all lithium ion battery technology, a HULK Professional battery works by moving lithium ions between two electrodes during charge and discharge, that movement is what stores and releases the energy, and it's a fundamentally different process to the chemical reaction inside a lead-acid cell.

This guide covers the three models in the range (HU6490, HU6491, HU6494) and pulls the installation, charging and storage detail straight from the official HULK Professional manual, so you don't need to dig through a PDF to find it.

Is this the right battery for you?

If you're searching for a lithium car battery to replace your vehicle's engine starting battery, this isn't it, a starting battery needs a different cell design built for a short, high-current burst, not sustained deep-cycle discharge. HULK Professional Lithium Batteries fall into the lithium deep cycle batteries category: built for the opposite job, powering accessories over long periods away from mains power, camping, touring, or overnight at anchor, and recovering cleanly from deep discharge, cycle after cycle, far better than a lead-acid equivalent.

As deep cycle lithium batteries go, this range is built around a genuinely simple pitch: less time thinking about your power setup, more time using it. Compared to a sealed lead-acid (SLA/AGM) battery of similar capacity, the main differences are:

Lead-acid / AGM

HULK Professional LiFePO4

Usable capacity

Typically 50% of rated capacity before damage risk

Safely usable to 80–100% of rated capacity

Cycle life

Roughly 300–500 cycles at deep discharge

2,000+ cycles at 100% DOD, up to 6,000 at 50% DOD

Maintenance

May require periodic checks depending on type

Maintenance-free, battery management system handles cell balancing automatically

Weight

Heavier for the same capacity

Lighter for the same capacity

Charger

Standard lead-acid charger

Requires the right charger with a Lithium/LiFePO4 setting

LiFePO4 batteries are commonly reported to last around four times longer than lead-acid batteries and provide close to 100% usable capacity against roughly 50% for a comparable lead-acid unit, cycling well past 2,000 times where a typical lead-acid battery is closer to 500.

A note on the charging temperature range: this battery cannot be safely charged below 0°C, the BMS will prevent it. If you're camping or touring somewhere genuinely cold, let the battery warm up (or wait until temperatures rise) before charging.

Overcharging outside the specified voltage and temperature limits can degrade battery lifespan significantly over time, which is exactly why the built-in protection exists, it isn't just a formality.

Safety: what makes LiFePO4 different, and what to still avoid

LiFePO4 is widely considered the safest common lithium battery chemistry, it's significantly more thermally stable than most lithium batteries on the market, including the lithium-ion chemistries used in consumer electronics and EVs, and is far less prone to thermal runaway.

Lithium batteries generally are also considered safer than some older battery types since they don't leak harmful gases during normal use. That's a genuine, meaningful safety advantage, but it doesn't mean the battery is risk-free in every condition. The manual is explicit on the following:

  • Never dismantle, crush, puncture, open or shred the battery.
  • Never expose it to heat or fire, and avoid direct sunlight.
  • Never short-circuit the terminals or allow conductive objects to touch them.
  • If the battery leaks, avoid skin or eye contact with the liquid and seek medical advice if contact occurs.
  • Use only chargers designed for LiFePO4 batteries.

Installation: what the manual actually tells installers

  • Mounting brackets aren't included. Use LN5 (DIN88) or equivalent metal hold-down brackets, the battery must be fully restrained so it can't move in its compartment during use.
  • Never reverse the polarity on the (+) and (–) terminals when connecting a charger or appliance.
  • Wiring batteries in parallel or series: up to 20 batteries in parallel, up to 4 in series (12V units). Wire so current is divided equally across all batteries — if wiring is uneven, the battery closest to the load carries the most current and wears faster than the others. Sort batteries by voltage and internal resistance before connecting them into a pack.
  • Built-in discharge protection: each battery has an internal DC switch-off that activates at 80% discharge. HULK Professional recommends adding an external bi-stable latch relay between the battery and your DC load or inverter as a second layer of protection.

Charging correctly

  • Use 14.6V ±0.2V for a 12V battery (29.2V ±0.2V for 24V setups), constant voltage/constant current.
  • If your charger has a Lithium mode, use it. HULK 4x4 Professional chargers with a dedicated "Lithium" setting are recommended for best results and battery longevity.
  • Maximum charge current is 1C, but for best long-term cycle life, HULK Professional suggests limiting it to C3 (a third of the battery's capacity).
  • A full charge from empty takes as little as 1 hour at maximum current, or around 3 hours at the endurance-friendly C3 rate, faster charging than the 2-4 hour average often quoted for lithium batteries generally.
  • Never leave the battery on continuous charge when it's not in use, and disconnect the charger if the battery won't be used for an extended period.

Storage: the 100-day rule

If you're storing the vehicle, boat or van over winter:

  1. Charge the battery to above 80% before storage.
  2. Disconnect it from all loads and the charger.
  3. Fit the terminal covers.
  4. Recharge to above 80% every 100 days, then return it to storage mode.

Skipping this is the single most common cause of a "dead" lithium battery that's actually just been left flat too long.

End of life: disposal and recycling

Always fully discharge the battery before disposal, and cover the terminals with electrical tape or another approved covering to prevent short circuits. Battery recycling is encouraged, dispose of it in accordance with your local, state and federal regulations, and note that HULK Professional will accept batteries returned to the seller.

Warranty

HULK Professional lithium batteries carry a 5-year limited (pro-rata) warranty against manufacturing defects from the date of delivery. This doesn't cover damage from general wear and tear, short-circuiting, overcharging, deep discharging, overheating, installation by someone unqualified to work with electro-technical components, or use outside the product's specifications. Check the full warranty terms on your product documentation for complete conditions.

HULK 4x4 Lithium Battery FAQs

Can I use this to replace my car's starting battery?

No. This is a deep-cycle battery built for running accessories, not for engine starting. Starting batteries need a different cell design suited to short, high-current bursts.

Can I mix a HULK Professional lithium battery with lead-acid batteries in the same bank?

No. Don't mix batteries of different chemistry, brand, capacity, age or state of charge within the same parallel or series setup — the manual is explicit on this, since mismatched batteries charge and discharge unevenly.

What's the difference between the three models?

Capacity and footprint, not chemistry or charge behaviour — the HU6490 and HU6491 are both 100Ah (the HU6491 in a slim-line shape for tight spaces), and the HU6494 steps up to 200Ah.

Does the battery need manual cell balancing?

No, the built-in BMS balances the cells automatically during charging and idle periods, and it doesn't affect normal battery function.

What happens if the battery deep-discharges?

Below 6V on a 12V pack, the battery is considered unusable and can't be repaired — only recycled. The internal 80% discharge cut-off exists specifically to prevent this, which is why HULK Professional also recommends the external latch relay.

Is LiFePO4 safe compared to other lithium batteries?

LiFePO4 is generally regarded as the safest common lithium chemistry, more thermally stable than the lithium-ion chemistries used in most phones, laptops and EVs. That said, standard precautions still apply, don't puncture, crush or expose it to fire or heat, and always charge it with a compatible charger.
