What's in a Winch Recovery Kit? The Essential Gear List

Date Posted:12 January 2026

A winch recovery kit holds the gear that connects your winch rope to an anchor safely: a tree trunk protector, a winch extension strap, a snatch block or winch recovery ring, shackles, a winch damper, and gloves, all in one bag.

A winch on its own isn't enough. Hulk's winch manuals say never to wrap the rope around a tree and hook it back on itself, and never to winch with a recovery (snatch) strap. You need the right recovery gear between your winch rope and the anchor point. What goes into a kit varies a lot by brand and intended use, so check the contents list, not just the name on the bag.

Hulk's Complete Recovery Kit (HU200K) packs:

  • Tree protector strap, 12,000kg MBS, 3m
  • Winch extension strap, 5,000kg MBS, 20m
  • Snatch block, 8,000kg
  • 2 bow shackles, 4.75t WLL each
  • Snatch strap, 8,000kg MBS, 9m (for kinetic recoveries, not winching)
  • Pig-grain leather recovery gloves
  • Heavy-duty storage bag

Each item in a winch recovery kit, and the rating to look for

Every strap, shackle and pulley in the rigging should be rated above your winch's maximum pull. That's 4,309kg for a 9,500lb winch and 5,669kg for a 12,500lb winch.

What it does

What to look for

Hulk option

Tree trunk protector

Wraps the anchor tree so the rope never touches bark. It protects the tree and stops the rope fraying.

Wide strap, rated well above your winch; 3m suits most trees

Tree Trunk Protector / Equaliser Strap

Winch extension strap

Gives you extra length when the anchor is further away than your winch rope can reach. Pulling out more rope also keeps fewer layers on the drum, so you keep more pull.

20m length; MBS above your winch's rated pull

Winch Extension Strap

Snatch block or winch recovery ring

Doubles the line, so the winch carries about half the load. Also lets you pull from an angle.

Rated above twice your winch's pull for a double line. A ring only suits synthetic rope

Winch Recovery Ring 14,000kg (for 9–20mm synthetic rope and soft shackles)

Shackles (bow or soft)

Securely connect the winch line, straps and snatch block to the anchor point and to rated recovery points.

Rated WLL stamped on steel bow (D) shackles. Soft shackles are lighter and safer if something lets go, and suit synthetic rope

4.75t WLL bow shackles in the Complete Recovery Kit; Hyper Shackles soft shackles

Winch damper (winch blanket)

Hangs over the line and soaks up the energy if a winch cable or rope snaps, so it drops to the ground instead of whipping back.

Heavy enough to stay on the rope; place it about 1.8m from the hook

Use a damper, or a heavy rag or carpet, as Hulk's manuals advise

Recovery gloves

Protect your hands while handling rope and hooks.

Heavy-duty leather

Pig-grain leather gloves in the Complete Recovery Kit

Wheel chocks

Stop the winching vehicle rolling forward when it's the anchor.

Rubber, with a pull ring

What about the snatch strap? Most kits include one for kinetic (snatch) recoveries between two vehicles. It stretches, which is the point in a snatch, and the danger in a winch pull. Hulk's manuals say never to use a recovery strap while winching. Keep it in the kit, but keep it out of the winch rigging.

Your winch also ships with a hand saver (hook strap). Use it every time, and never put your fingers through the hook.

How the kit comes together in a winch recovery

The core safety rules here come from Hulk's winch manuals.

  1. Pick an anchor straight ahead. Keep the pull as straight as you can through the fairlead. Hulk's manuals warn against side pulls.
  2. Rig the anchor. Wrap the tree trunk protector low around a solid tree and join both ends with a shackle. Never wrap the winch rope itself around the anchor.
  3. Add distance or a block. If the anchor is out of reach, add the extension strap. If the load is heavy, run the rope through a snatch block or winch recovery ring and back to a rated recovery point.
  4. Spool out and connect. Leave at least 5 full wraps on the drum. Use the hand saver to hold the hook, and wear gloves.
  5. Hang the damper. Place it over the rope about 1.8m from the hook.
  6. Clear the area. Stand well to the side of the rope line, and keep bystanders and children away. Use a spotter where you can.
  7. Winch in short pulls. Keep the engine running and the vehicle in neutral. On the 9,500lb and 12,500lb Genesis winches, pull up to 30 seconds, then rest at least 30 seconds.
  8. Pack up properly. Respool the rope evenly under tension. Wash muddy rope in mild soapy water and dry it out of direct sun.

Never engage or disengage the free-spool clutch under load. Never use a winch to lift people or hold a load during transport.

Buy a kit or build your own?

A ready-made kit is the simplest way to get matched gear in one bag. Build your own if you already carry some of it, or need ratings to suit a bigger winch.

FAQs about Winch recovery kits

What is the best winch recovery kit?

The best kit is one where every item is rated above your winch's maximum pull. It should include a tree protector, an extension strap, a snatch block or ring, shackles and a damper. A kit with only a snatch strap and shackles isn't a winch kit.

How does a winch recovery ring work?

The synthetic rope runs around the ring's channel and back to your vehicle, which doubles the line like a snatch block. Hulk's 14,000kg ring is lighter than a snatch block, at under 1kg. It suits synthetic rope (9–20mm) and soft shackles only.

Can I use a snatch strap to extend my winch rope?

No. Snatch straps stretch and store energy. Use a non-stretch winch extension strap instead.

Do I need a damper if I have synthetic rope?

Yes. Hulk's manuals call for a damper or heavy rag on the line for every winch, whatever the rope.

Soft shackles or steel D-shackles?

Both do the same job, connecting winch lines, straps and anchor points. Soft shackles are lighter and safer, because there's no heavy steel to fly if something fails. They also won't damage synthetic winch rope. Steel D-shackles are tougher against abrasion and easy to inspect. Plenty of people carry both in their recovery gear.

Why do winch recovery kits differ so much between brands?

Each kit is built for a different intended use. Some are snatch-only, while others add winching gear like extension straps and snatch blocks. Compare every item's rating against your winch's pull, and fill any gaps with individual recovery gear.
